Roy Edward Brook

Roy Edward Brook was born to William and Minnie Brook on Friday th576e 9th of July, 1920. Roy lived with his parents on Cromwell St, Wooloowin in Brisbane, Queensland. After completing a 5 year apprenticeship to A.J. Wilson as a woodworking joiner, Roy enlisted into the ‘Citizen Air Force’ (the RAAF’s reserve force) at age 21. Roy swore the oath on the 6th of June 1941 and was attached to Group V of the reserve aircrew.

On the 11th of October Roy began his training at 3 Recruit Centre, Brisbane. Roy’s 8 months of training included postings to medalsnumber 3 Initial Training School in Sandgate, Queensland,
where he learned the basics of Air Force and military life, number 3 Wireless Air Gunners school in Maryborough, Queensland, and number 1 Bombing and Gunner School in Evans Head, New South Wales.

542Roy was promoted to Leading Aircrafstman on the 6th of December 1941 during his time at 3 WAG. Roy then passed the Air Gunner course and was awarded the Air Gunner badge on the 23rd of July 1942 during his time at 1 BAG. As a result of this achievement, he was subsequently promoted to Sergeant. His final promotion came on the 23rd of January 1943 where he was promoted to Flight Sergeant.

On the 29th of June 1943, FSGT Roy Brook was posted to number 467 Squadron at RAF Bottesford in the United Kingdom. On the night of October 3rd, FSGT Brook departed RAF Bottesford on a bombing mission to Kassel, Germany, as Lancaster JA906‘s Wireless Operator. The aircraft was not heard from after it departed and it never returned. Roy Brook was declared missing presumed dead on the 11th of October 1943.

For his service, FSGT Roy Brook was awarded The Defence Medal, The Australia Service Medal 1939-45, The 1939-45 Star, The Air Crew Europe Star, and The War Medal 1939-45.
